This was a terrific debut novel! The heroine, Sarah, has been married for two weeks when she is found in a compromising position with a soldier, and an heirloom necklace (last seen around her neck) has vanished. Her husband, St. John Sutliffe, Viscount Fairfax is among the crowd that discovers Sarah's disgrace. Everyone reacts badly, and she is accused of thievery. Her mother-in-law "encourages" Sarah to run away and a terrified Sarah obeys her. Meanwhile, St. John duels the soldier, and believing him to be mortally wounded, flees to the West Indies. The story picks up three years later ~ St. John has returned, the soldier lived, and he has been told that Sarah is dead. He is told a lot of things, but what is truth and what is a lie? When he finds out that Sarah is in fact alive, he is determined to find her and make her pay for her actions. When he finds Sarah living in a small, poor fishing village with a child that may or may not be his, he begins to question everything he has been told. There were many misunderstandings in this story, but they were realistically portrayed, so they didn't bother me like they usually do. This story was very well done, with no modern dialogue or blatant historical inaccuracies. The villagers felt real, the child was not precocious (yay!) and Sarah and St. John were fully fleshed ~ Sarah was no doormat and refused to explain herself, since he didn't allow her a fair hearing when she really needed one. St. John was angry, hurt, confused and conflicted, but was trying to be fair-minded. The story moved along at a good clip, with a bit of a surprise over what had really happened to the damn necklace. I love a good epilogue, and this author really nailed it - sweet, charming and satisfying! I have already ordered the next book in this series!Tags : To Kiss a Thief (The Runaway Desires Series Book 1) - Kindle edition by Susanna Craig. To Kiss a Thief The Runaway Desires Series Book 1 edition by Susanna Craig Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this book and thought the author showed great promise. I was a little confused whether or not St. John even liked Sarah, seems like it went back and forth until the ending. I really didn't feel a strong connection between them. There was quite a bit in the book that was unnecessary to the story and at times boring.
A while ago I decided Historical Romance is not my genre. "To Kiss a Thief" has challenged me to reevaluate that. Rather than a simple, vapid heroine pining away for some brooding, dominating object of desire, we are presented with our heroine Sarah who takes action in her life. Her life doesn't just happen to her. Sarah is a strong women in an era where women played supporting roles. It was fun reading about how she created her new life and how she was able to make her difficult situation work for her and even help the village, too.
With St. John, Sarah's husband who spends some years abroad, we have a hero who struggles with learning about himself and his wife. His actions are not always explained fully. I would have loved to have had the Capt. Brice character subplot expanded.
There were enough twists in the plot to keep it interesting. Supporting characters were sketched, but the story would have benefited with a few more secondary plot lines to grow the characters further.
This is the first of three novels by this author. I hope that subsequent books will give us readers deeper characters and a further developed setting. I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the next installments.
(3.5 stars) Reviewer Kimberlee Jewell has it right when she says this is an author to keep an eye on. I like the way Craig writes and develops the story here. I wasn't especially fond of some of the characters and their behavior at times was frustrating, so it wasn't a 5-star books for me.
This is a trope I've always liked the marriage of convenience. The one here doesn't begin well and doesn't even last a week before disaster strikes and the couple are separated. The H, of the peerage, is obligated by his father and the family's lack of funds to marry the daughter of a wealthy middle-class businessman. She's not even especially pretty. Well, needless to say, he isn't super romantic around her and not only that but just days into the marriage they are separated for three years. I won't go into the whats and hows and whys of this but there are a few interfering people who don't want this marriage to succeed and do their best to sabotage it by making the h look guilty of not only infidelity but also theft.
Since the H and his family are financially strapped and that's why he's marrying money, the reason the rich h should steal something is unclear to logical people, but most every character here has a lot of illogical moments. That's my main problem with the book since I do appreciate the writing. For me, the whole misunderstanding could have been settled with a real conversation at the beginning, but, of course, I do realize that's the case with almost every romance I read. If Misunderstandings and Failures to Communicate were forbidden in romances, there would be only a handful of them to read.
Craig shows lots of promise. I have pre-ordered the next book in the series. The price is right and the writing is good.
