I'm an avid reader and it takes a lot to hold my interest. While I was initially intrigued by the idea of uncovering Judy Barton's created history, this book offered so much more than that. In vivid detail, I observed the experiences in her life that formed the woman she became. I developed empathy for her as she became (here we find unwittingly) entangled in a murder and her own ultimate demise.

The story turned my assumptions about Judy Barton upside down. She is many-faceted, from her strength and independence, to her flawed love for Scottie. I can't call this book a "page turner", as I think that indicates a rush to the end. I didn't want to be rushed. I wanted to savor every page. It was so well written that it felt like taking a little trip back to the 50's, with the social and sexual mores of those times.

Every now and then, I find a book that I have to enjoy a second (or third) time. This will be one of those, I'm sure!

Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 thriller Vertigo saw Scottie Ferguson overcome conspiracy and personal demons in order to get to the truth of a shocking mystery...but what if he got it wrong. As a lifelong fan of the work of Alfred Hitchcock I can not begin to explain the excitement in which I approached the opportunity to revisit one of his masterful tales with a fresh perspective.

Authors Wendy Powers and Robin McLeod take us to the heart of one of the most influential cinematic tales told by Hollywood. Weaving it's way through the narrative of Vertigo Powers and McLeod shine a light on a perceptual angle that the world has failed to see in over 50 years of looking. They culpt a masterful tale that is both contradictory and complimentary to the source. The fact of the matter is the Vertigo is Judy Barton's story and she's finally given the chance to tell her tale and it's been well worth the wait.

Hitchcockians must read this, the rest of the world are invited to discover an instant classic.
As the authors of "The Testament of Judith Barton" point out, most viewers of Vertigo have been content to put the Judy Barton character in a box, that of guilty co-conspirator, because she "fits the part." At best, these viewers see Judy as "somewhat" sympathetic due to how she suffers as Scottie's girlfriend, but they also see her death as a proper comeuppance for an accomplice to murder. After a viewing of the movie where the authors paid particular attention to Judy, they came to see her in a new light and then wrote this novel from her point of view. I'm glad they did.

Judy was always my favorite Vertigo character and the one I rooted for - the real Judy, who just wants to be loved for who she is. In the film, I find her more beautiful, spirited, and independent than her fake Madeleine alter-ego. Madeleine is gray; Judy is emerald green and lavender. Madeleine often appears almost masculine in hairstyle and attire; Judy is all woman. Madeleine is an heiress; Judy's a single woman determined to make it on her own. And Judy asserts herself, however meekly, when her self-esteem and personhood are attacked.

In breezy prose the novelists increase one's symptathy for Judy and create Kansas experiences for her which later inform (or are analogous to) what happens to her in San Francisco, during the events in the film. I have a few nit-picks - things I would've done differently and motivations for Judy which should be made clearer - but this is a four-star book which fans of Vertigo will like, especially those who recognize what a terrible person Scottie is, and how misogynistic it would be to wholly root for him. Root for Judy instead, as I always have, and the film becomes a very sad tragedy - the master's masterpiece can retain its status as a work of genius, a classic, even among feminists.

Look for sly references in the book to another Hitchcock film and to actress Kim Novak. 4/5 stars.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. It was fast-paced and well-written, and it really made me want to see the movie "Vertigo" again. The rapidly changing qualities of Judith Barton's life could easily be confusing with less-skilled authors. Once started, I couldn't stop reading. It is a novel idea, turned into an engrossing novel.

book that I couldn't wait to read. It was written by a husband and wife team, who are friends of my sister. I love the movie Vertigo and their book is an enjoyable of what could have been the sequel to this movie. Great read.
I am a fan of Hitchcock films, especially Vertigo. So, when I stumbled across this book, I was so intrigued by the idea of Judy's history, prior to the movie, that I couldn't resist reading it. I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The authors did a superb job of melding the world of their story with the movie; the characters and tone are true to the film. I also really like the fact that they chose to portray Judy not as some gold-digging floozy, but as a sensitive young woman who was caught up in a plot from which she couldn't escape, even though she knew she needed to. I think it would have been much easier to portray her negatively.

This genre is rather new to me and I would love to see more authors take on movie characters and create stories that occur prior to the films. In fact it would be cool if this was made into a film, a prequel, instead of the tired old sequels that we have all come to expect from Hollywood these days. A fine companion to the film, I highly recommend The Testament of Judith Barton.
